Trained as a sculptor, painter and enameller and works across these disciplines. Materials are very significant and exploited for their physical properties, social interpretation and tactile qualities. Sally juxtaposes disparate materials such as concrete, plaster, copper, textiles, perspex, hair, wax and paper and coaxes meaning from them.
Both in solo and group exhibitions Sally has made installations about deterioration and ageing. For many years trees and their growth habit have informed her work. Recently Sally has been exploring tree growth in the Australian bush by drawing into vitreous enamel before firing it. Seedpods from trees and other plants also stimulate her creativity.
There is often female bias in the work which has a subtle combination of preciseness and free expression. It frequently references the body, its limbs, trees and their branches.
Sally likes her work to respond to its location. Works shown on this site were completed over many years.
Sally has been resident in Australia since 2001. Phone: +61 29419 6453 email: sallyaplin@gmail.com
