It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jan Shaw, a dedicated member of the Sculptors Society since 1974. Her contributions to the art community were significant and enduring, marking her as a prominent figure in the field.
Born in Sydney, she was inspired to become a sculptor by her first teacher Mitzi McColl while at Frencham Summer School, Mittagong. She then studied at the College of Fine Arts, UNSW and the Sculpture Centre at The Rocks. Jan was very involved in the setting up and maintenance of The Rocks premises as a home for The Sculpture Society and where, along with other members, she was involved in teaching classes. She also led sculpture workshops during “Art & Artists week” at All Saints College, Bathurst from 1980 to 1987.
Jan’s artistic repertoire encompassed beautifully carved abstract sandstone and marble sculptures, assembled sculptures in wood and also bronze, epoxy and fibreglass. Jan rented a sculpture studio at May Barrie’s property, Callemondah where a group of sculptors worked on large pieces outdoors. Recently she was working on a commission of a large marble carved love seat.
Jan has exhibited extensively not only with The Sculptors Society but also at other venues such as The Irving Sculpture Gallery, Glebe, Melbourne and Sydney Hilton Galleries, Gallery 460, Gosford, Defiance Gallery, Sydney. Several of her works are on display at the Macquarie University Sculpture Park and she has a major commission “Nanarup Dreaming” on a large pastoral property in Western Australia.
Jan Shaw’s absence will be deeply felt by her friends and family.

1974 Studied Art at the Sculpture Centre, The Rocks.
Became a member of The Sculptors Society.
1980 – 83 Taught sculpture for The Sculptors Society.
1980 – 87 Taught Sculpture for ‘Art & Artists Week’ at All Saints College, Bathurst.
